Limerick Greens The present objectives of the newly reviving Limerick Greens
are to to become involved in various projects which constructively
raise public awareness of environmental issues and to
restart involvement with local issues.
Public Awareness Initiatives
We compiled a complete list of Recycling Facilities in the Limerick area which
we placed in a local newspaper, The Limerick Post
, on March 24th 1999. This list aims at giving the concerned citizen the
necessary information to facilitate recycling waste. It also aims at provoking
citizens to consider their responsibilty in this area.
Envirosoc in University of Limerick submitted a profile of their society also. This group are very active and are an encouragement to all concerned with the
environment.
2. GLAN Schools Project Another initiative we are centrally involved in is the designing of a School
Project on an Environmental theme and running it in some schools in the city.
We named our awareness-building network GLAN, which stands for Green Limerick
Awareness Network.
The current project is on the theme of Recycling and it is starting its pilot
phase in the Christian Brothers' School, Sexton Street, in autumn.
Whad help from the Curriculum Development Unit in Mary Immaculate College,
Limerick, in drawing up the project plan and class activities. We are receiving
sponsorship from companies and businesses with a local presence.
3. 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly'
Schools Photo Competition
Gearoid is organising this initiative. He has drawn up an invitation and
brochure which he has posted out to 40 schools in the area. The competition
is open to all school ages (primary and secondary) and developed photos
must be submitted by 31 May 1999. The theme of the competition is the
sights in the Limerick area which are either beautiful or an eyesore. The
objective of the competition is to encourage young people to look
critically at their environment and assess the reasons why an area is
naturally beautiful/developed beautifully or mismanaged or polluted in
such a way that it loses its attraction.
Gearoid has invited the Chairman of Limerick Corporation among others to
judge the competition. Bewley's of Cruise's Street have offered to display
the entry photographs.
