A research project entitled
Environmental Rhetoric: A Case Study of the Mullaghmore Debate
(completed as part of my course in Technical Communication and for which
I won an award) gave me the opportunity
to make contact with environmental groups in the Limerick area. From there I
became involved with the local Green Party Group as I had wished to be involved
in environmental issues for some while. I take particular interest in the
current debate on GMOs and am the group Spokesperson on that subject.
A particular encouragement to our group have
been the Clare Greens
- our country neighbours. They are vibrant and taking full advantage
of all the media facilities of Ennis Information Age
Town. Visit them!
The above painting by Avignon
I think is pertinent to this page and am delighted to
be able to use it. The interdependency of the entire eco-system is expressed beautifully
here. And this is what environmentalists would believe: our natural environment needs
vigilant care not only to guarantee our own safety and health, but that of our children
and other coming generations.
The Principle of Sustainability
is that which underpins most of the significant
present-day environmentally friendly activities. The principle is as follows:
Sustainable Development:
"meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of
future generations to meet their own needs" ("Our Common Future" by
the World Commission on Environment and Development, otherwise called the "Brundtland
Report", 1987). Sustainable Ireland
is a site well worth a visit for information on Sustainability.
My own involvement with the Greens is recent and follows from my belief that it is a
practical way to transform belief into necessary legislation. Nothing is perfect: I do
think that the Green Party need its popular perception challenged a little: from one of
anti-progress, one-issue group to that of a group which supports positive initiatives, and extends its remit
more thoroughly to other policy areas.
